What is an anode rod?

A metal rod installed inside a water heater tank that corrodes in place of the tank walls, protecting the tank from rust and deterioration.

An anode rod is a length of metal, usually magnesium or aluminum, suspended inside your water heater tank. Its job is straightforward: corrode instead of your tank. The metal of the rod breaks down over time from exposure to the water inside the tank, while the tank itself stays protected. Once the anode rod deteriorates enough, it stops working, and the tank walls begin to rust.

Most water heaters in Columbia homes come with an anode rod already installed. The rod lasts anywhere from three to ten years depending on water hardness and the mineral content in your local supply. Hard water and higher temperatures eat through rods faster. When the anode rod fails, your tank's lifespan shortens significantly because corrosion spreads quickly once it starts on the steel tank walls.

Replacing an anode rod before it fully corrodes away is one of the most direct ways to keep a water heater running longer and avoid premature replacement. It is a simple maintenance task that plumbers handle as part of routine water heater service. If you notice rust-colored water coming from the hot tap or your water heater shows other signs of age, having a plumber inspect the anode rod can reveal whether replacement will extend the tank's useful life. Find water heater service providers in your area to assess your heater's condition.
